In 2002, Will Nelson joined the Silicon Valley firm of Day Casebeer Madrid and Batchelder, where as an associate and partner, he represented major high technology clients in patent, antitrust, licensing, copyright, contract, and trade secret protection disputes. Mr. Nelson continued his intellectual property work when he joined Howrey LLP as a partner in 2009.
Some career highlights include:
• Qualcomm, Inc. v. Maxim.
Counsel for Qualcomm in its successful action for patent infringement and trade secret misappropriation in connection with radio frequency signal processing technology. Obtained preliminary injunction against continued trade secret misappropriation.
• In the Matter of Certain Mobile Telephone Handsets, Wireless Communication Devices, and Components Thereof
Counsel for Qualcomm in ITC investigation regarding the exclusion from importation into the U.S. of Nokia mobile phones
• Versata Software, Inc. v. SAP
Counsel for SAP in its defense against patent infringement suit involving enterprise software. With Mr. Nelson’s assistance, SAP successfully overturned a $139M jury verdict.
• Sun Microsystems v. Microsoft
Counsel for Sun in its antitrust dispute against Microsoft regarding the JAVA technology and server protocol interoperability. Sun recovered $1.6B in settlement of that litigation.
Additionally, Mr. Nelson provides strategic counseling to clients regarding licensing, competition law, patent enforcement, protection of trade secrets and electronic discovery.
